New Skin
The artwork comes undone in ‘New Skin.’ Old forms are shed, assumed coherence crumbles, and the singular face of the artwork fragments and is reimagined. ‘New Skin’ presents a series of new works by Eduardo Wolfe-Alegría, Emily Galicek, and Genevieve Felix Reynolds that push the boundaries of the painted medium. Curated by Tai Mitsuji, the exhibition briefly flirts with recognisable forms, only to reject them—and, instead, cast us into the unknown.
In Wolfe-Alegría’s works, the world pulses and morphs. Drawing on his time living on a remote property in Walbunja Country, Wolfe-Alegría’s paintings and sculpture fuse the real and the imagined to evoke ecological entanglement, seasonal change, and more-than-human agency. Visually arresting, the works teem with transformation: mushrooms twist and dance; a metamorphosed dandelion-like creature meets our gaze; and a stretching dog seems, for a moment, to curl the whole world around itself. Yet the works are also guided by a subtler conceptual undertow, gesturing to migration, diaspora, and colonisation through introduced species living alongside native ones. As the artist puts it, “I see my own experiences mirrored in those of the introduced species: a queer child of migrants, of mixed Latin and Anglo-American heritage entangled in a culture grappling with its own colonial legacy.”
