The Underwood

A body of work currently being developed, The Underwood evokes an experience in which boundaries between male and female, fantasy and reality, are blurred. In the narrative of the series woodland sprites or spirits, part plant/animal, male/female are engaged in various states of entanglement and play, as a mysterious force sweeps through them, fragmenting and distorting their hybrid forms. This force is formally embodied as a sinuous curve, reminiscent of the “whiplash” curve of the Art Nouveau. It could be read as an unruly breeze, a mischievous will-o-wisp or possibly as something more sinister.
