Study for Aphrodite

“Study for Aphrodite” is a large scale quadriptych, initially created and exhibited through an MFA at Sydney College of the Arts. The painting depicts an underwater environment, part ocean part cosmos, in which animals, humans, plants, bones and shells, coalesce and disperse in a kind of murky underwater mélange. This open-ended mythscape is charged by an ever changing force, or in Patricia Picininni’s words, “the amazing overflowing fecundity of things, that is both marvellous and overwhelming.” Alternatively the work could be read as a kind of warning, a projected future embedded with a fraught sense of anxiety, set within a toxic ocean awash with mutant forms.
